Getting Your Social Insurance Number (SIN)

A Social Insurance Number (SIN) is a nine-digit number you need to work in Canada and to get government benefits and services.

What You Need Before You Apply 📝

To get a SIN, you must provide a valid primary document that proves your identity and legal status in Canada.

You will need one of the following:

  • For permanent residents: Your Permanent Resident card (PR card) or your Confirmation of Permanent Residence (COPR) if you arrived in the last year.
  • For temporary residents: Your work permit, study permit, or visitor record that says you can work in Canada.

You also need a document that proves where you live (your proof of address). This can be a government letter or a bill with your name and address on it. If the name on your document is different from the name you are using now, you will need a supporting document, like a marriage certificate.

How to Get Your SIN

Applying for your SIN is free. You can choose one of three ways to apply.

  1. Gather your documents. Have your original primary document, proof of address, and any supporting documents ready. For online applications, you will need digital copies.

  2. Apply online. This is often the fastest method. You will upload your documents on the Government of Canada website. You will get your SIN by mail.

  3. Apply in person. 🏢 You can visit a Service Canada Centre. Bring your original documents with you. If everything is correct, you will get your SIN during your visit.

Once your application is approved, you will receive a letter with your SIN. Keep this number safe and do not share it unless it is necessary, for example, with your employer.
